Welcome to Edinburgh Dental Specialists. At our specialist practice, we have a team of highly skilled & qualified Clinicians from a variety of disciplines who are dedicated to making sure that your dental treatment for implants or other types of treatment is efficient, friendly, and gets you the desired outcome you are looking for. We take great care in understanding your clinical needs, and then, using our multidisciplinary approach, ensure that we take the most effective clinical approach to achieving the results you want.
Founded by Dr Kevin Lochhead in 1994, Edinburgh Dental Specialists prides itself in being one of the largest referral practices in the UK. Over 1000 dentists have referred their patients to us in the past 10 years.

Meet the Team

Dr. Kevin A. Lochhead
B.D.S.(LOND),M.F.G.D.P.(R.C.S.Eng)

Dr Lochhead qualified from Kings College London in 1987. His special interests lie in complex reconstruction, dental implants and cosmetic dentistry. In 2002 he was recognised by the General Dental Council as a specialist in Prosthodontics. Dr Lochhead is Clinical Director of Edinburgh Dental Specialists, a referral only, multidisciplinary practice comprising 12 GDC or GMC recognised specialists and a support team of over thirty staff. The practice also benefits from its own onsite laboratory, with six technicians including a Master Ceramist, carrying out all aspects of prosthetic and crown and bridgework. At various times in the past 18yrs, Dr Lochhead has represented the Association of Dental Implantology in Scotland, been diploma tutor for the east of Scotland Faculty of General Dental Practitioners and clinical tutor on the MSc in Primary Dental Care at Glasgow Dental Hospital. Dr. Lochhead and the team at EDS have been running postgraduate courses on dental implants, cosmetic and restorative dentistry since 1995. The first “All-on-four” case in the practice was carried out in 2004. Whilst originally a delayed protocol, onsite laboratory services now allow predictable immediate loading, with provisional bridges being fabricated & fitted on the same day.

Dr Judith Lello
B.D.S. (SHEFF), M.D.S. (SHEFF)

 Since graduating from Sheffield University in 1978, Judith Lello has undertaken extensive postgraduate training. Three years were spent at Zurich Dental Institute, Switzerland, undertaken teaching, research and patient management: following which, in collaboration with Sheffield University, a masters degree was awarded. One year in Johannesberg, South Africa, at the University of Witwatersand, preceded returning to the UK in 1988 to practice for two years in the Manchester region. Since moving to Edinburgh in 1990, a special interest in advanced restorative work and a commitment to postgraduate and research activities has been maintained. The General Dental Council of Great Britain certifies Dr. Lello as a specialist in Prosthodontics and she continues to limit her practice mainly to complete reconstruction, dental implants and aesthetic dentistry.
Prof. Glenn E. Lello
B.D.S., F.D.S.R.C.S.EDIN. /ENG., I.,R.C.P.,M.R.C.S.,M.B.B.C.H.,F.R.C.S.,PH.
Professor Lello undertook dental, medical, oral and craniomaxillofacial surgery training and practice in association with seven Universities in a number of countries including South Africa, Switzerland, U.S.A and the U.K. He has held many positions within training and professional associations including the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and England. He has published many articled and served as editor of the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. For the past 16 years he has held a consultant NHS post in Edinburgh and maintains a specialist practice including dental implants.

Dr Crawford Bain
B.D.S.,D.D.S.,M.S.C.,M.B.A CERT.PERIO., CERT. FIXED PROS., FELLOWSHIP IN IMPLANTOLOGY

After spending nine years in general practice in Scotland and Canada, Dr. Bain completed speciality training in Periodontics and Prosthodontics at the University of Pennsylvania in 1981. Since then he has been at various times Director of Occlusion; Head of Periodontics and Director of Implant Dentistry at Dalhousie University, Canada.In 1990-1991 he was the Branemark Surgical Implant Fellow at UCLA, USA where his research into Implants and Smoking resulted in the Osseointegration Foundation/Quintessence Publishing Company Award for the best scientific article in the International Journal of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Implants in 1993. He has maintained a specialist practice since 1981, returning to Scotland in 1995.Dr. Bain is certified by the General Dental Council of Great Britain as a specialist in Periodontics, Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry.

Dr Pierluigi Coli
DDS, PhD

 

Dr Pierluigi Coli graduated with honours in Dentistry at the University of Genova, Italy in 1990. He was trained as a specialist in Periodontology, Dental Implantology and Prosthodontics in the prestigious Departments of Periodontology, of Oral Rehabilitation/ Branemark Clinic and of Prosthetic Dentistry/Oral Material Sciences (Faculty of Odontology, Goteborg University, Sweden) during the years 1993-2005.Dr Pierluigi Coli is a registered specialist in Periodontology as well as Prosthodontics.Dr Coli worked as Guest Researcher at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden.He was awarded a PhD in Prosthetic Dentistry and Oral Material Sciences from the Goteborg University in 1999, and became Associate Professor in Prosthetics Dentistry at Goteborg University.Dr Pierluigi Coli has authored several scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals and has lectured internationally.He has been involved in the training of undergraduate and post-graduate students at the Departments of Periodontology, of Oral Rehabilitation/ Branemark Clinic and of Prosthetic Dentistry/Oral Material Sciences (Faculty of Odontology, Goteborg University, Sweden), where he worked as a specialist.In 2007 Pierluigi moved to the UK to join the staff at the Edinburgh Dental Specialists Clinic, Scotland. He still maintains research and teaching contacts with the University of Goteborg.

Dr Fran Veldhuizen
BDS, MFDS RCS(Ed), M Clin Dent, MRD RCS(Ed)

Dr Fran Veldhuizen qualified from the University of Dundee in 1996. She spent several years in general practice where she developed her interest in Prosthodontics and gained her MFDS prior to taking up the position of Specialist Registrar in Edinburgh. In 2007 she gained her Masters Degree in Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics and in 2009 she was awarded her postgraduate Specialist qualification, MRD RCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Mr Martin Paley
BDS, MB ChB, FFDRCSI, FRCS, FRCSEd(OMFS)
Martin is a Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon for NHS Lothian based in the Regional Maxillofacial Unit at St Johns Hospital. His main NHS area of interest is head & neck cancer and he performs the often complex reconstruction and oral rehabilitation these patients require using free tissue transfer techniques and dental implantology.He has recently introduced to the unit, the newer minimally invasive techniques of sialoendoscopy to manage salivary gland disease. He has peripheral clinics at the Western General Hospital Oncology Centre, Edinburgh Dental Institute and in both Fife and the Borders. He also has a weekly clinic at the Spire Murrayfield Hospital.He is a graduate of Dundee and Aberdeen Universities and his specialty training was in Wales with time at the Vrije University in Amsterdam. Following this he completed a fellowship in head and neck surgical oncology in Liverpool before taking up his consultant post in Edinburgh in 2005.
Prof. Lars Sennerby
DDS, PhD
Prof. Lars Sennerby graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Gothenburg, Sweden in 1986. He joined the research group led by Prof. P-I Branemark in 1982 and participated in studies on osseointegrated dental implants. In 1991 he was awarded a PhD-degree on a thesis entitled “On the bone tissue response to titanium implants”. He was trained in oral surgery at the Branemark Clinic, Public Health Service and Faculty of Dentistry in Gothenburg and worked there part-time from 1989 to 2001. The Branemark Clinic served as an international centre for clinical work, research and education regarding treatment of edentulous patients with dental implants. In 1993 he was appointed Associate Professor and in 2000 Professor in Clinical and Experimental Oral Implantology at the Department of Handicap Research/Biomaterials at the University of Gothenburg. He held a part-time position as professor at the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Umea University, Sweden from 2003 to 2004. From 2011, he is part-time Professor at the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Institute of Odontology, Sahlgrenska Academy at Gothenburg University, Sweden and works today with implant surgery in private practice in Sweden, Italy and Scotland.Dr Sennerby has published some 300 papers, reviews and book chapters on bone biology and dental implants and is a frequently invited lecturer on international meetings and conferences. He has been the supervisor of 18 Ph.D. theses, mainly on clinical and experimental aspects of dental implants. He is co-founder and co-Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research.

Mrs Gillian Ainsworth
BDS Sheff 1996 FDS RCPS Glasg MSc Edin MSurgDent RCS (Ed)

After graduation from the University of Sheffield in 1996, Gillian worked in general practice, a district general hospital and a busy city maxillofacial surgery unit. In 2003 she became one of the first two surgeons to complete the new specialist training program in Surgical Dentistry, also obtaining a Master of Science research degree. For the last eight years, Gillian has worked at Glasgow Dental Hospital providing oral surgery under local anaesthetic or sedation and teaching both undergraduate dental students and newly qualified NHS staff. Gillian is a recognised Oral Surgery specialist, a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Ashley Francis
Patient treatment co-ordinator
Ashley is our patient co-ordinator and will help guide you through the whole process of your treatment. She is likely to be your first point of contact, and is always happy to share her knowledge and expertise, as well as fielding any questions you may have. If necessary, she will also liaise with your own dentist.
